Foundation Stage

When your child enters the Reception class they will work within the Foundation Stage Curriculum documents. At this stage they will be working towards the Early Learning Goals within six areas of the curriculum. These areas are:

·        Personal, social and emotional development

·        Communication, language and literacy

·        Mathematical development

·        Knowledge and understanding of the world

·        Physical development

·        Creative development

The value of play is recognised in all of the above areas. We believe that young children learn best through practical experience. Our classrooms, therefore, are organised so that children can work with a range of equipment and materials in both teacher led and independent activities. There are opportunities to develop reading, writing and numeracy skills in a range of role play situations, for example a doctor’s surgery.

Throughout the year the teachers will use a national assessment system called the Foundation Stage Profile and record the children’s progress and achievements in each of the curriculum areas. During the year at parents meetings this profile will be shared with parents so that they can see their child’s progress during the year. At the end of your child’s year in Reception the information will be used to chart your child’s achievements over the whole year.

At Nettleham Infants we believe that good foundations within the Early Years set excellent standards for the future.
